Class Pages
Warren Dell opened on 2nd July 1949 and is a one form entry school catering for children from the age of 2 to 11 years of age.
Warren Dell was the first Junior and Infant school to be erected on the South Oxhey estate with 600 children on roll. The first Head Master was Mr C. Warburton who started teaching children at Warren Dell in May 1949. When the school first opened the Junior children only attended school for half days due to very high numbers - 360! Warren Dell was given its name due to the high number of rabbits in the area!
The school is set in pleasant and spacious grounds. It has two playgrounds, a large playing field and other grassy areas surrounded by mature shrubs and trees.
Please select each class below to find out class information and their learning:

Key person
As part of our practice, we use a key person system. Your child will be allocated a member of staff as their key person that you will meet at a home visit before you child starts at Preschool. You can talk to them if you have any concerns or if you want advice. Your child's key person will record observations of your child’s learning on Tapestry the online learning journal. They will formally discuss this information with you at termly consultations, but they are also here to give and receive information at the start and end of every session. Equally you can speak to any member of staff you feel comfortable with.
2yr Check
Between Spring and Summer Term your child will receive a written report on their development outlining progress in the three main areas of the curriculum;
1 – Personal, Social and Emotional
2 – Physical
3 – Communication and Language
This is in addition the 2yr health check that your health visitor will conduct.
Tapestry
All the observations and photos we take of your child are put onto an online learning journal called ‘Tapestry’. You can login to check your child’s progress as well as adding photos and comments from home.
Weather
We will almost never close when it snows but in the event of a school closure you will be contacted by the school office. Please send your child with a hat and sun cream in very hot weather.
Clothes
We suggest that your child wears practical and comfortable play clothes and velcro strap shoes. Soft jogging bottoms or a tracksuit are most suitable. Please no tights jeans, lace up or open toe shoes. Hands on learning can be messy and although aprons are provided sometimes the mess still makes its way onto the clothing. All children must bring named wellies and a warm fleeced lined waterproof puddle suit/all in one splash suit to be kept at Pre-school.
Please provide your child with weather appropriate clothes
1. Cold weather – gloves, hat, coat and scarf

As toilet skills are still in their early stages: please provide a complete change of clothes to be kept at pre-school during term time in case of accidents. Please avoid difficult clothes such as dungarees or trousers with belts. If your child is in nappies please provide the pre-school with nappies and wipes. We support children at all stages of potty training.

Our Nursery session runs from 9.40am until 12.00pm and we have a limited amount of spaces for 30hours funding until 3.00pm for thoses who are eligible. In Nursery we start each day with our busy finger activities which develop our fine motor skills- necessary for us to begin writing, cutting, painting. We have 2 group times where we do specific learning around the different areas of learning and we have learning through play inbetween. 'Learning through play' is an important part of our day and sometimes is referred to as LTP. Your child’s learning will be based on the Early Years Foundation Stage seven areas of learning. Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both inside and outside. The wide range of activities and experiences we offer are intended to enrich the overall development of each individual child.
Here are some photos of our learning so far this year:
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is how the Government and Early Years professionals describe the time in your child’s life between birth and 5. This is a very important stage as it helps your child get into the routine of school life and is the foundation of their future learning and successes. From the moment your child starts in our Nursery they will experience a full, active, exciting and secure world that supports their development, care and learning needs. At Oxhey Wood Primary School, there is one Nursery and two Reception classes and the teachers follow a legal document called the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum framework.
What is the EYFS Framework - why do we have one?
There are seven areas of learning and development that shape educational provision in Early Years settings. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Our children’s learning experiences enable them to develop competency and skills not just academically but also socially, emotionally, behaviourally and physically.
The three prime areas of learning are crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and for building their capacity to learn and form relationships. They are:
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
Our staff will also support children in four other areas, through which the prime areas are strengthened:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
All areas of learning are connected together. The characteristics of effective teaching and learning weave through them all. That is because children in the Early Years are becoming more powerful learners and thinkers. These characteristics develop as they learn to do new things, acquire new skills, develop socially and emotionally and become better communicators.
Characteristics of Effective Learning
This is a key element of the Early Years Foundation Stage development. It covers the ways in which children should learn from their environment, their experiences and their activities and how this is to be reflected in teaching lessons.
The 3 characteristics are:
- Playing and exploring - eg showing curiosity about objects, events and people
- Active learning - eg showing a ‘can do’ attitude
- Creating and thinking critically - eg observing and solving a problem
