Music Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact Statement

Intention (Why do we teach what we teach?)

We have designed our Music curriculum to ensure that learners:

· Develop a passion for music, fostering a lifelong love and appreciation

· Build the skills, knowledge, and confidence to become performers, composers, and listeners

· Explore a variety of global and generational music genres, celebrating cultural diversity

· Engage in singing, instrument playing, composing, and responding to music

· Acquire transferrable skills such as teamwork, leadership, creative thinking, and performance

Implementation (How do we teach it?)

Our Music curriculum is taught:

· Progressively, starting in Early Years with foundational musical awareness, supporting imagination and creativity, and developing throughout the school

· Through integrated lessons combining performing, listening, composing, music history, and the interrelated dimensions of music

· By building on year-on-year knowledge, focusing on fluency in singing, instrument playing, and using the dimensions of music in composition and improvisation

· Using Charanga’s Original Music scheme to ensure continuity and progressive skill development

· With engaging, diverse musical activities that develop skills and understanding of various musical styles and traditions, alongside weekly singing assemblies

· By reinforcing cross-curricular connections, using music to support memory in subjects like math (e.g., number bond songs) and history (e.g., rhymes)

· By offering opportunities to learn brass instruments in Year 4

· Through performances in events like Harvest, Christmas, and Spring concerts

Impact (What has been the impact and how do we know?)

The impact of the Music curriculum is evident in:

· High engagement and excitement from children, with skills that support lifelong appreciation of music

· Confident performers, composers, and listeners who express themselves musically both in school and beyond

· An appreciation for diverse genres, fostering respect for different musical styles and generations

· Enthusiastic participation in music activities, demonstrating a deep passion for the subject

· Measurable progress, with children meeting the national curriculum expectations at the end of each key stage
